“I’m deeply concerned about the racial and health disparities that exist in our nation, especially as regards breast and cervical cancer,” explained Dawn Shelton-Williams, MSW, LCSW. Her background working as a certified social worker trained in crisis intervention, case management, etc., strengthened her specialized skills developed as a result of 30 years in human services.
A medical decision can be straightforward or very complex. That is why many individuals rely on a PN who knows the medical system and is comfortable talking with clinical staff. With the patient’s permission, a PN can go to medical appointments to help patients understand their conversation with clinical staff to help ensure that decisions are based on facts versus emotions in creating action plans.
Personal preferences, lifestyles, and values are essential considerations in overcomeing barriers to care, such as transportation, housing, and employment assistance. work closely with your care team of doctors, nurses, and other clinical staff to ensure positive outcomes and teach you how to advocate for yourself. Communications with patients can be face-to-face, via telehealth or talking on the phone. Clarifying the interactions between navigator and patient, Shelton-Williams says, “There are nurse navigators that assist patients with the clinical aspects of different medical conditions. For example — cancer nurse navigators help patients in dealing with the clinical aspects of cancer. ; Financial navigators assist patients with financial issues associated with their health care.
