(Washington, D.C.) The National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) recently joined House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and her colleagues, allied organizations and supporters on the steps of the Capitol for the release of WHEN WOMEN SUCCEED, AMERICA SUCCEEDS: AN ECONOMIC AGENDA FOR WOMEN AND FAMILIES to address the economic challenges facing women and families today.
“Women make up just over half the U.S. population. They are workers, caregivers, and increasingly, their families’ primary breadwinners. America depends on the hard work of women,” said NWLC Co-President Marcia D. Greenberger. The average American woman is still paid only 77 cents to every dollar paid to her male counterpart. Two-thirds of minimum wage workers are women. Approximately two-thirds of American women with young children work, yet affordable, quality child care options are scarce. Nearly half of full-time workers, women and men, are not covered by the Family and Medical Leave Act, and a far greater numbers do not have employer-provided family and medical leave.” The economic agenda address issues of critical importance to women including: raising wages, paycheck fairness and protection against employment discrimination.
